Special Volunteer Opportunity

The LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District is seeking a volunteer to work on a “Post-Planning Project Survey” for our Land Use Committee.

Background:
The Land Use Committee for the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District has been very successful so far in our efforts to get the owners and managers of new buildings to include a “lease addendum” for each new tenant, to assure that new residents of our neighborhood are fully informed about the nature of the Cultural District they are moving into.

The key is identifying and contacting new projects at the right time.  We have good systems in place for spotting new projects as they move through the SF Planning Department pipeline, but we believe there are some buildings that are past the point where our monitoring procedures can identify them.  So we need to do a survey of these “post planning” projects in our neighborhood, using online maps, listings, and other known resources.

The Survey Project:
This is a one-time effort — although we will actually want to do it three times, over three months, to be sure we don’t miss any.  Because this is a time-limited project, we think it would be ideal for someone who wants to get their feet wet with regard to land use issues and the work of our Committee, but is not ready for a long-term commitment.

The volunteer job requires only basic computer skills and attention to detail.  You can do it on your home computer, on your own time schedule.  We will fully train and support you. When done, you can accept our thanks and say goodbye, or move to deeper involvement with Land Use Committee, and perhaps become part of the Cultural District’s leadership.

Above all, you will be helping to protect, preserve, and promote Leather and LGBTQ values and culture among the new residents of our very special SoMa neighborhood.

If interested, please contact landuse-chair@SFLCD.org, or attend the next meeting of the Land Use Committee on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at 7:00 pm, in the back bar of the SF Eagle, 398 12th Street at Harrison, in San Francisco.

Of course, other volunteer opportunities within our efforts are plentiful!  Please contact info@SFLCD.org or call 415-237-3237 to discuss.

Cultural District Sports New Logo

We are pleased and proud to introduce the logo for the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District.

The design of the San Francisco LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District logo was completed by designer/leatherman Jon Stoa in September of 2019. Its purpose is to represent both the Leather community by the use of the chain links and the LGBTQ community by use of the traditional pride colors. It is meant to convey a sense of an all-inclusive minded community all linked together and connected by the circle of chain links. These links signify a physical space which is the “Cultural District” – the historical significance of which can now be preserved as a physical/geographical sense of place in San Francisco.

Jon Stoa, Art Director/Designer, has been working in advertising, marketing and brand identity over two decades. He attended Art Center College of Design and later went on to work at Wieden+Kennedy, Draft FCB, and Apple, Inc. He has worked on building many major brands – from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies including Apple, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, Levi’s to Ann Sacks, Joe’s Barbershop, Modo, Hilton Hotels, Red Cross and the AD Council (Smokey Bear). He has done work with several San Francisco non-profits including Open House, Rocket Dog Rescue, Mr. San Francisco Leather, and now the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District in San Francisco.

Census 2020 is Coming

Wherever you live, and whomever you live with, a  complete count of all residents during the upcoming Census is very important to all of us. The 2020 Census will count same sex couple households, which has special importance to our LGBTQ community.

The Census Bureau is now locally hiring. The area census office of San Francisco is looking for candidates to fill in multiple positions.

Please click on the images above for more info, or apply at 2020census.gov/jobs (or here), or contact our local representative, Benson (Baokun) Zhao, at (628) 800-2743 or baokun.zhao@2020census.gov.

Everyone counts!

501(c)3 Achieved!

The Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District has passed another milestone, in obtaining its 501(c)3 tax-exemption letter from the IRS.  This means that — among other things — donations to the Cultural District can be tax deductible.

The Cultural District will continue to use SOMArts — another 501(c)3 organization that serves as a cultural hub within our part of the City — as its fiscal agent, safeguarding our funds and administering any grants that we receive from the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development or other San Francisco agencies.  But having our own 501(c) status is an important achievement, and will help the organization achieve its goals.

So hurrah!
