Housing Element Listening Session for Japantown Cultural District
March 10 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Shaping the future of the housing in Japantown starts with your input! Make sure our community’s voices are heard!
Now is the time to reimagine a more vibrant, livable, equitable future for Japantown. It is also the opportunity to address the inequities caused by Urban Renewal or the “Redevelopment,” that have continued to impact housing and community sustainability in Japantown for decades.
The Housing Element is San Francisco’s housing plan for the next 8 years (2022-2030) and the first one that will center on racial and social equity. This ongoing policy effort will address the City’s housing needs in terms of adequacy, affordability, racial and social equity, environmental justice, design, resiliency, and livability. It will include policies and programs that express our collective vision and values for the future of housing in San Francisco. It will define our priorities for housing solutions guiding decisions and resource allocation for creating housing and providing housing services. The Plan will address the housing needs of all, especially communities of color.

The challenges around Housing in San Francisco are rooted in troubled policies that have resulted in the inequities of our society. There are five Key Ideas which the Planning Department is seeking input on. One of the Key Ideas is to: “Recognize the historic racial, ethnic, and social discrimination in government programs and champion equitable housing choice to reverse their consequences.”
1. What are your concerns around housing in Japantown?
2. How has historic inequitable policies impacted the livability of Japantown for the community?
3. What does a more vibrant, livable Japantown look like?
4. What do you envision the future of housing and community space in Japantown to look like?
The SF Planning Department is currently in the “Vetting Key Ideas with Community,” and “Refining Policies Together” phase of developing the updated Housing Element.
Let’s make sure that the collective vision and values of our Japantown community is reflected in the Housing Element update so that Japantown thrives into the future! We look forward to your participation and input at this “Housing Element Listening Session!
