LeatherWalk is an exciting opportunity for visibility and fun, as community members help raise $22,000 to support the District’s Leather Legacy Landmarks sidewalk plaques initiative, honoring iconic SOMA locations that started serving the community in the 1960s. We plan to install plaques at 77 historic locations. Key plaques will be featured on the District’s guided walking tours, new dates coming soon.

We look forward to walking with you on September 22!

Rachele Sullivan Plaque Unveiling

A heart plaque honoring Rachele Sullivan has been installed in Eagle Plaza. We thought it appropriate to hold the official plaque unveiling during Leather Week.

Rachele, who died in 2022 at the age of 54, was a cis straight ally and leatherwoman, one of the founders of our Cultural District, and a prominent figure in SOMA’s Filipino community.   Rachele also served on the board of Folsom Street, helping to launch Venus’ Playground, the women’s space at the Folsom Street Fair.

Rachele’s friends and familiy joined the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District and Friends of Eagle Plaza on Tuesday, September 24, in Eagle Plaza (in front of the San Francisco Eagle, 398 12th Street) to share memories of Rachele.

Attendees received a memorial pin, as pictured above, donated by Eville Designs.

Stop the Violence II

There will be a Safety Forum: Community Unity Event on Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, at the SF Eagle, 398 12th Street, in San Francisco.

This is a call for our community to unite and stand against violence. We need your support and voices to join the conversation. Let’s come together to show our strength and solidarity.
Participating organizations include ONYX Northwest, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Castro Community on Patrol, and LDG (the Leathermen’s Discussion Group)
At our last safety forum, we planned another which would address concerns of other segments of the community.
Proposed Agenda (not final):

3. Recognizing supporting groups –
4. D’arcy Experience
5. SOMA West Updates
6. Self-defense class
7. Castro Community on Patrol officer (Street Safety)
8. Onyx/Sisters whistle presentation
