Flying Our Colors
Just as we were admiring the new pole wraps on the lamp posts of SOMA… surprise! New “pole banner” flags, bearing both the Cultural District logo and the colorful design of our custom bandanas. have now appeared!
Fifty of them are going up today and Monday, along Folsom, Harrison, and cross streets from 8th to 12th.
One side of the duplex banners features the name and logo of the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District, over a background that reads “Kink / Consent / Queer / Power”. The other side displays the pattern of the District’s custom bandanas (including boot-prints and other imagery), in one of seven classic “hankie” colors.
The Cultural District sends its thanks to Supervisor Matt Dorsey and Legislative Aide Bryan Dahl for moving both of these long-awaited projects forward.
SOMA Poles Wrapped with Leather Pride
The LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District contracted installation of 107 Leather Pride Flag images on light poles in the District as part of our placemaking efforts to reinforce the aesthetic and the identity of our unique neighborhood.
Look for them on Folsom, Harrison, Howard, Ringold, the Eagle Plaza and numbered cross streets!
The Leather Pride Flag design reflects the crosswalks at Eagle Plaza, and the world’s largest, flying Leather Pride flag on the Tony DeBlase Flagpole.
The 25″ tall flags include the Cultural District logo, and are positioned high enough on the poles to allow for both good visibility and space below for temporary event posters. They have an anti-graffiti coating and have been heat sealed to the light poles.
It was a long road to get them approved, manufactured and installed. The District would like to thank Supervisor Matt Dorsey, aide Bryan Dahl, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, Bear Pad and A3 Visual for all their help in making this happen!
Cultural District Booth at Up Your Alley
The LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District hosted a booth at the Up Your Alley Street Fair, from 11 am to 6 pm on Sunday, July 30, 2023. Our booth was located on Dore Street, about seven booths north of Folsom Street.
In addition to providing information about the Cultural District, offering our unique Logo Pin and colorful bandanas for sale, we invited folks to take selfies at our booth, using our “step and repeat” backdrop, and an assortment of kinky props. Some of you used your own camera, others let us take your picture!
Some of our favorite of those pictures are shown below. ALL the others (including some that Instagram kept us from uploading in real time) can be found on our Instagram page.
(NOTE: If you are unfamiliar with Instagram, be aware that many of the photos shown are actually mini-galleries of about 10 images each. Open one, then use the small > arrow to see the rest.)
We hope you had a great day at the Fair, and will treasure a photo of you and your friends in your kinkiest gear (or borrowed from us) as a lasting memory of a great “Up Your Alley” afternoon !
